One muggy and unusual night, I woke at 3 AM, hazily recalled predictions of spectacular meteor showers, and dragged a sleepy Larry with me out to our driveway to watch for meteorites. After craning our necks for a few minutes that seemed like hours, we finally saw one or two tiny, magnificent flashes. It was a catch-it-in-the-corner-of-your-eye type thing. There and gone. Blink and you miss it. We stumbled back inside and I couldn't sleep for the Glory of God's night sky. Words pelted my brain and I had to write them down. (See the very first post: Meteors at Night.)

Like the meteor shower, my inspiration often comes unbidden at night in quick bursts that demand my attention. I get excited about it. I don't want to miss it, not any of it. Not one quick flash, not one Illumined moment, not one whisper from God.

I'm trying hard to catch it and collect it and put it all in one sky. You're welcome to do a little gazing here anytime.

Imperfect

A little bit misshapen,
But useful all the same –
A dishcloth that’s a few threads short
Of stitched and crafted fame.

It doesn’t fret about its shape
Or grieve for what it’s not.
It strokes away the messy food and
Swims the water hot.

Like me, it isn’t perfect;
It breathes an humble air,
But Loved by its Creator,

It doesn’t have a care.

A Water

The watching of a water
Fascinates the brain, and
Sits it on a calming shore.
(Shower, river, rain)

It forms-reforms hypnotically and
Moves in strings and waves,
Magician to a sold-out crowd.
(Streams, seas, lakes)

It carries light within itself and
Sparkles as it goes,
Delighting eye and thought at once.
(Ice, waterfall, hose)

It splashes, tumbles, rushes on and
Teases with its speed,
Deceptive in transparent force.
(Waterslide, fountain, creek)

The watcher of a water
Is powerless to stop
His captive role as audience.
(Pond, puddle, drop)

Act of God

Holy, Holy Bible,
Each word an Act of God –
The breath of His own whisper,
The warmth of His own hug.

His step alongbeside me,
The food that He’s prepared,
The nudge, the touch, the jolting –
From Light and Truth and Love.

Studio

The harmony of family, a
Rhythm rare and special,
The studio of home, with
Fans like no other.

First tries and
Fine tuning.
Solos,
Duets,
Trios.

Time needed,
Time spent,
Alone, with
Help, with
Others.

Safety,
Honesty,
Freedom, a
Crucible Creative.

Caged

So, what’s it like out there,
that world beyond the cage,
(the cage that I’ve been placed in, OR
the cage of my own making)?

The breath of simple freedom,
the steps of precious choice,
the room to spread my wings –
All totally inviting!

Hill

I need a hill today.

A heart-thumping,
muscle-mashing,
breath-stealing,
bone-pounding,
brain-bashing
hill.

Not a mountain,
Just a hill.

Ribbon Rays (a Haiku)

Sunny ribbon rays
Reach through trees and fog to road –
Morning cathedral.
